The Squat School: Every Squat, Taught Properly
The squat is human resting position, gym cornerstone and mythology magnet all at once — ‘knees past toes!’ ‘ass to grass or nothing!’ — and most of the folklore is retired science. The school is in session: the form that matters, the myths that don’t, and the ladder up.

The Universal Checkpoints
The form that transfers to every variation: stance where YOU are strongest (shoulder-width-ish, toes slightly out — hip anatomy varies genuinely; the ‘one correct stance’ is myth number zero), weight spread across the whole foot (the tripod: heel, big-toe base, pinky base — toes-up or heels-up both fail the audit), knees TRACKING over toes (the direction rule that replaced the retired knees-behind-toes rule — knees past toes is normal and safe in deep squats; knees caving inward is the actual error), chest proud and core braced (the exhale-on-effort pattern), and depth to YOUR mobility (parallel-ish is a fine goal; the pelvis tucking under at the bottom — the butt wink — marks today’s depth limit, not a moral failing).
The Myth Retirement Ceremony
Formally retired: ‘squats ruin knees’ (the research says loaded squats STRENGTHEN knees — the knee-maintenance world prescribes them), ‘knees must never pass toes’ (born from a misread 1970s study; deep knee travel is athletic normalcy), ‘full depth or it doesn’t count’ (depth is mobility-dependent and every honest range builds strength), and ‘squats are bad for your back’ (braced, well-loaded squats build the back — the back’s enemy was always load beyond form, not the movement). Class dismissed, mythology.

The Variation Ladder
The progression path: the box squat (squat to a sturdy chair — the depth-and-confidence teacher; the true beginner start), the bodyweight squat (owning 15 clean reps), the goblet squat (the school’s MVP — the front-held weight counterbalances and FIXES form almost automatically; most people’s goblet squat outclasses their barbell attempt), the dumbbell tier (goblet heavier, then suitcase and front variations), and the barbell graduation (back or front squat when the goblet weights get silly — with the rack-and-form investment that deserves its own day). Sideways moves that count: split squats, the wall-sit isometric tier and the tempo game (the four-count Lagree trick applies).
The Programming Notes
Squats in the week: 2× weekly is the sweet spot for most (the twice-a-week strength doctrine’s anchor lift), 3-4 sets in the 6-15 rep range depending on load, progressing by reps-then-weight (the machine-pin logic with free weights), and the warm-up ritual (bodyweight reps and hip circles before loading — the squat rehearses itself). The mobility sidebar: ankles and hips gate depth — the heel-elevated squat (small plates under heels or lifting shoes) is a legitimate tool, not a cheat. The squat rewards attendance like nothing else in the gym: strength, knees, bone and the get-off-the-floor-at-ninety insurance, all on one movement.
Tripod feet, knees track free, goblet fixes everything, twice a week forever. The squat school’s diploma is simple — a movement you own for life, mythology not included.
